Hello, beauties.
One of the questions we get most often is: What’s the difference between Oracle Cards and Tarot Cards? How do I know which to use, and when?
Let’s break it down in 3 easy steps!
- Tarot Cards follow a specific structure. In a Tarot deck there are two main sections: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. Each section has a distinct role in the deck, and each card within each section covers a wide range of themes (**we love this classic Rider Waite Tarot Deck (amazon) if you’re after something to add to your collection!).
- By contrast, Oracle Cards are a bit more free flowing in nature and do not follow a structure. They can vary widely in the number of cards in each deck, theme, and overall purpose + intention.Â
- When to use Tarot vs. Oracle: Honestly, it depends on the experience you’re seeking! While both Tarot and Oracle can offer insight into challenges or questions you might have, it really comes down to how structured of a practice you’re looking for.
If you’re after something a bit more in depth and detailed, we recommend opting for Tarot (head to this article for a more detailed Tarot ‘how to’!).Â
If you’re feeling like a more free flowing practice - set an intention, shuffle your cards, pull one and reflect on the message - Oracle cards are probably your jam. Of course, our Soulful Affirmations make the perfect Oracle deck for this type of practice!
In the end, neither one is ‘right’ or wrong. We always recommend tuning into what you’re feeling drawn to in the moment, and letting your intuition lead from there.
Sent with love,
the mindful collective xx
